Considering that California alone expects EVs to consume&nbsp;<strong>17,000 gigawatt-hours by 2030<\/strong>, we&#8217;ve got a long way to go to prepare our infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From charging infrastructure to grid capacity, battery performance, and even the materials needed for EVs, we\u2019ve compiled a list of the top EV challenges so you&#8217;re fully prepared. This is especially true for EV batteries.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Battery demand is expected to grow by around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/operations\/our-insights\/power-spike-how-battery-makers-can-respond-to-surging-demand-from-evs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>30 percent<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;nearing 4,500 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year globally by 2030. And\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/electric-power-and-natural-gas\/our-insights\/capturing-the-battery-value-chain-opportunity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the battery value chain<\/a>\u202fis expected to increase by as much as 10x between 2020 and 2030 to reach annual revenue as high as $410B.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EV batteries are mostly made of cells. The primary materials in cells are lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, aluminum, copper, or graphite. Lithium, nickel, and cobalt, however, are giving manufacturers the most trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lithium-ion batteries: How do they work?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VXy-IoRykWk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These materials present an obstacle in a variety of ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is an economic shortage of lithium. This means that the lithium price does not match the mining investment required to get it out of the ground profitably.&nbsp;For example, the Australian mining company&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-galaxy-rsrcs-output-idUSKBN1X22SL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Galaxy Resources reduced lithium mine production at its most important mine by about 40% in 2019&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>as did other Australian lithium mining companies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The refinement process of nickel is more expensive in North America since there&#8217;s a limited number of places where you can refine it. Currently, it\u2019s cheaper in Asia, which is the world&#8217;s largest producer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cobalt is a limited resource found mainly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Cobalt mining has&nbsp;raised concerns over environmental issues and social issues such as child or slave labor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This shortage of EV batteries results in a long list of back orders and production stalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iea.blob.core.windows.net\/assets\/4eb8c252-76b1-4710-8f5e-867e751c8dda\/GlobalSupplyChainsofEVBatteries.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Three sources of this production delay include<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lingering production challenges caused by the pandemic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Concerns around Class 1 nickel supply from Russia due to the war in Ukraine&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Structural underinvestment in new supply capacity between 2018-2020, when metal prices (and profits) were low<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Electricity Supply and Demand&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To supply enough electricity for EVs, utility companies will have to generate far more electricity and figure out how to transport it throughout the country in both rural and urban areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fleets will become one of the heaviest electricity consumers, competing especially with car owners for access to low-cost, reliable electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While understanding the amount of energy consumed by electric vehicle fleets varies by state, California projects that electric vehicles will consume&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/blogs\/stateline\/2020\/01\/09\/electric-cars-will-challenge-state-power-grids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>5.4% of the state\u2019s electricity, or 17,000 gigawatt-hours, by 2030.\u202f<\/u><\/a>Wyoming, for instance, would need to up its electricity production by 17%, while Maine would have to produce 55% more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>California\u2019s worry comes not from the state\u2019s overall power capacity, but rather from its ability to quickly ramp up production during times of peak demand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, utility companies will be challenged with finding ways to produce more electricity than ever to supply the increased needs of the market and avoid blackouts or brownouts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<br\/><br\/><br\/><br\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Investment Costs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"802\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ftsgps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/pexels-daniel-andraski-11554746.jpg\" alt=\"fleet electrification will reduce carbon emissions: black sedan with a plug-in charger\" class=\"wp-image-6814\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ftsgps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/pexels-daniel-andraski-11554746.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.ftsgps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/pexels-daniel-andraski-11554746-300x241.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ftsgps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/pexels-daniel-andraski-11554746-768x616.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This creates a barrier for many fleet operators who want to go green but don&#8217;t have the budget to afford such a high upfront cost.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resource Cost Pressures&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only is sourcing raw materials expensive for manufacturers, but the new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/credits-deductions\/credits-for-new-clean-vehicles-purchased-in-2023-or-after#:~:text=You%2520may%2520qualify%2520for%2520a%2520credit%2520up%2520to%2520%25247%252C500%2520under,purchased%2520from%25202023%2520to%25202032.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Inflation Reduction Act of 2022<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;will also require automakers to source more of those materials in North America over time if they want their vehicles to qualify for tax incentives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These regulations and shortages combine to put pressure on an already expensive process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Higher Upfront Costs&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What do all of these factors mean for consumers? While new regulations can help, the upfront cost can be substantial for fleet managers. This can block out smaller fleets that lack the funds or resources to transition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out this average vehicle ownership cost calculator from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/afdc.energy.gov\/calc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>U.S Department of Energy<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to compare the total cost of ownership for electric vs ICE vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<br\/><br\/><br\/><br\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Charging Dilemma&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"650\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ftsgps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/pexels-kindel-media-9799997.jpg\" alt=\"Charging station\" class=\"wp-image-6459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ftsgps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/pexels-kindel-media-9799997.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.ftsgps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/pexels-kindel-media-9799997-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ftsgps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/pexels-kindel-media-9799997-768x499.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Challenges also arise in charging operations after fleet managers procure EVs for their fleet. The biggest barrier facing fleet operators across the globe is how inaccessible charging EVs are compared to fueling at gas stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States currently has around&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/interactive-ev-charging-stations-across-the-u-s-mapped\/#:~:text=Currently%2C%20the%20U.S.%20has%20about,fueling%20stations%20in%20the%20country\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>53,000<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;charging stations (a total of 140,000 individual public EV charging ports). According to National Association for Convenience Stores (NACS), there are more than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.api.org\/oil-and-natural-gas\/consumer-information\/consumer-resources\/service-station-faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>145,000&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;gas fueling stations across the U.S. including standalone gas stations, convenience stores, retail locations, and grocery stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that the U.S. has almost 3x the number of gas stations compared to EV charging stations. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most EV charging stations are found in higher-income areas, making it harder for EVs to be accessible to those living in rural or low-income areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inadequate Charging Infrastructure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Charging stations are harder to find since investment costs and difficult infrastructure development limit them.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/afdc.energy.gov\/files\/pdfs\/EV_charging_template.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Miscellaneous fees<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;from regulations and permit requirements to add charging stations have made them a more challenging investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/public-and-social-sector\/our-insights\/building-the-electric-vehicle-charging-infrastructure-america-needs\"><u>Mckinsey<\/u><\/a>&#8216;s scenario-based modeling projects that the annual demand for electricity to charge EVs would surge from 11 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) to 230 billion kWh in 2030. The demand estimate for 2030 represents approximately 5 percent of the current total electricity demand in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means America would require&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/public-and-social-sector\/our-insights\/building-the-electric-vehicle-charging-infrastructure-america-needs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>1.2 million public EV chargers and 28 million private EV chargers<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;by that year.\u202f<strong>The country would need almost 20x more public and private chargers than it has now<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lack of accessible public charging stations creates range anxiety for drivers, preventing fleet managers from adopting EVs into their fleets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KAz4Cb73W6M\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Range Anxiety in Rural Areas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The last thing fleet managers want to worry about is their driver being stranded somewhere because their EV didn\u2019t have a sufficient charge to make it to their next stop. Better access to charging stations, especially in rural areas, is needed so fleet drivers can drive with peace of mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lack of EV charging infrastructure in rural areas is one of the most significant barriers to rural EV adoption in the US. Although these areas are home to less than one-fourth of the population, they cover&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/content\/dam\/Census\/library\/publications\/2019\/acs\/ACS_rural_handbook_2019_ch01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>97%<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;of the land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most EV charging stations are located in major cities. Major metro areas have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eesi.org\/articles\/view\/beyond-cities-breaking-through-barriers-to-rural-electric-vehicle-adoption\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>500 to over 1,000<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;public outlets per 25 square miles, while most suburban areas have 1-25 outlets, and the majority of rural areas and small towns have none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To increase EV charging infrastructure in rural areas, here\u2019s what must happen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Increased federal investment<\/strong>. The Biden-Harris administration\u2019s proposed bipartisan infrastructure bill would allocate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/08\/02\/heres-what-is-and-isnt-in-the-new-bipartisan-infrastructure-bill-for-evs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>$7.5 billion<\/u><\/a>\u00a0for EV charging stations, with priority funding for rural areas. It would be the country&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/growthzonesitesprod.azureedge.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1406\/2021\/07\/bipartisan-infrastructure-fact-sheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>first federal investment<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in EV charging stations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>More electric cooperatives<\/strong>. For example, locals in the rural mountain community of Meeker, Colorado have warmly received two EV charging stations&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tristate.coop\/cooperatives-bringing-electric-vehicle-chargers-rural-communities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>installed<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;by White River Electric Association, a member of the Tri-State Generation &amp; Transmission Association based in Colorado.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a variety of challenges that lay ahead for EV adoption, but the most pressing would be the barriers rural areas face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it\u2019s clear the future is heading towards electric vehicles, it\u2019s essential that all parties such as rural cooperatives, automotive manufacturers, and the federal government work together to alleviate range anxiety and make sure rural areas are not left behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<br\/><br\/><br\/><br\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Post EV Fleet Adoption Challenges&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With any new technology introduced to your fleet, there are sure to be some challenges to come. EVs are no different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftsgps.com\/resource-center\/more-stops-in-less-time-with-route-matrix\/\">Planning routes<\/a>, maintenance schedules, and ensuring your drivers are comfortable will take some time and may cause organizational challenges for your fleet management plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may take some time for your drivers to become adjusted to new routes and having to factor in more or fewer stops depending on available charging stations. Switching from traditional fuel stations to charging stations can also provide challenges to your drivers since it might take longer to charge their EVs and create more downtime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fleet managers and drivers will have to pay close attention to changing regulations and taxes. New technological solutions and education will also allow fleet managers to minimize these challenges so EVs can be more easily adopted into their
